Meeting

Deb Taylor called the meeting to order at 7:42 p.m. at the Human Relations Department, 947 New Hampshire. She welcomed our guest--Lydia Leon--to the meeting.

Minutes of the September 13, 2006 meeting were read. Bruce made and Hilda seconded a motion to accept them. The minutes were approved on a voice vote.

Deb noted that the upcoming Cultural Awareness Training is ready and that she will hand out evaluations for the officers to complete.

Deb mentioned that she has moved the Lawrence Alliance Web site information from the Great Plains Internet Service to her own service in order to lessen the problems that were being experienced with GPIS.

Deb reported that she would like to present a Year-End Report at an upcoming City Commission meeting. This would allow the Commission to know what the Alliance is doing as well as make us more visible to them. Members requested that Deb send them a copy of the report before she goes to the Commission. Hilda noted that a recent report (by the American Institute of Architects to the City of Lawrence) which stated that the City should reach out to the City's minority and ethnic groups should be a wake-up call for the Lawrence Alliance to do more.

Tiffany, Ed, and Sara T did not renew their Board appointments. Board members gave Deb names of people to contact about joining the Board.

Lydia Leon discussed her role on the new Lawrence Citizen Advisory Board. The purpose of this Board is to advise and assist the City of Lawrence and the Police Department in policy development, education, community outreach, and communications related to racial profiling (Ord. 7936, December 2005). The LCAB was created in order for the City to comply with SB 77, which requires cities to adopt a policy dealing with racial profiling by police officers. Lydia believes that the Lawrence Alliance and the LCAB should work together since they have similar goals. She plans to attend the upcoming Cultural Awareness Training at the Police Department. Deb and Lydia plan to keep each other briefed on each Board's events.

Adjournment

Hilda made and Bruce seconded a motion to adjourn the meeting at approximately 9:00 p.m. The motion was approved on a voice vote.
