Deb Taylor called the meeting to order at approximately 6:01 p.m. in the auditorium at Plymouth Congregational Church, 925 Vermont. Minutes of the November 12, 2008 meeting were presented. Robbie made and Mike seconded a motion to accept the minutes. The minutes were approved on a voice vote.
Deb welcomed new Board members Susan Cooper and Asra Haq. They replace Bob Hubert and Debra Drummet. Deb also welcomed Lydia Leon.
Cynthia handed out packets of information to the upcoming cultural event. Robbie made and Chris seconded a motion to call our program the Festival of Cultures and to accept the logo designed by Cynthia. The motion passed on a voice vote. The Board also agreed to change the Festival date to Sept 27 since Sept 6 (the original date) falls on Labor Day weekend. Lydia Leon mentioned that the Feria Hispana (Spanish Festival) would be happy to merge with the Lawrence Alliance in order to create one big Festival of Cultures. The Board agreed to merge the two events. We agreed to hold the event from noon to 5:00 pm.
The Board discussed other topics concerning the Festival:
Port-a-potties
Types of groups and service agencies to contact
Compile a mailing list
Free advertising such as Kim M and Hank Booth at KLWN and Lisa Patterson. Water bill?
Chairs, trashcans, recycling bins, banners, DJ, a stage, art projects for kids
Lydia noted that her group spent around $850 on the Feria Hispana. She stated that around 1,000 people attended and lots of groups participated.
The Board agreed to meet at Johnnie's on Feb 17 to meet with Tim Laurent of Parks n Rec and to firm up Festival plans.
Chris agreed to find out who the best contacts are at KU for getting group involvement.
Mike agreed to contact the Lawrence Police Dept to find out when we can host another Educational Awareness Training session.
Asra agreed to make contacts with the Haskell community and other groups.
