The Lawrence Alliance, a community-based non-profit organization, was formed in 1991. In July 1990, a Community Task Force on Racism, Discrimination and Human Diversity was set up by the Lawrence City Commission at the request of an ad hoc work group that included faculty and administrators from KU and Haskell Indian Junior College and representatives from the city's Human Relations Commission. The Task Force was formed to discuss possible discrimination in Lawrence and ease tensions surrounding the recent deaths of many Native Americans.   In 1991, the Task Force recommended the formation of the Lawrence Alliance Against Racism and Discrimination. Today, the alliance is referred to simply as the Lawrence Alliance. The City Commission officially created the Lawrence Alliance at its August 27, 1991 meeting. The Alliance is in partnership with the City of Lawrence, Kansas University, Haskell Indian Nations University, and the USD 497 school district. The Alliance coalitions with other groups to discourage discrimination and promote community and tolerance in Lawrence.
